I finally finished The Leftovers and I think I watched it wrong

Everyone keeps saying the ending is this huge emotional payoff, but I binged it in 4 nights and just felt confused. I went back and rewatched season 2 with a notepad, and the details line up way better. Anyone else need a rewatch to actually get what the show is doing, or am I just slow?
