Overheard a couple at the diner arguing about whether to start 'The Bear' or 'Severance'

They were debating for ten minutes about which show had a better first episode to hook them. What's your go-to show for convincing someone in just one episode?

What convinced my friend? The first episode of "The Wire" did it for him.

The first episode is a terrible way to judge that show. It's way too slow and confusing for a new viewer. Your friend got lucky it clicked for them.

Totally agree about first episodes being a bad way to judge. I had the same thing happen with a friend and "The Wire." Like @reeseb73 said, that first episode hooked my buddy too, but it was a total fluke. For me, the show that always works is "Breaking Bad." That pilot is a masterclass. You get the pants, the RV, the diagnosis, the crazy choice. By the end you're just sitting there needing to know what this sad dad does next. It's a perfect trap.

Tell you what, I'm the worst at this. Made my wife watch three whole seasons of a show I swore "gets good soon" before she looked at me and said it was the worst thing she'd ever seen. My track record for picking winners is so bad, I should just let other people choose.
