Forgot to normalize a batch of 1095 and lost 4 hours of work
Was finishing up 6 blades on Saturday at my shop here in Spokane, pulled them out of the forge and quenched them in parks 50 like normal. Grabbed the first one to check hardness with a file and it bit right in, way too soft. Went back through my notes and realized I grabbed the wrong steel out of the bin, this was 1095 not 1084, and I ran it at 1475 without any soak. Had to redo the whole batch, anneal them all, re-profile 2 that warped, and start over with a 10 minute soak at 1475. Got them done by Sunday night but my hands were shot. Any of you keep your steel in labeled racks or just trust your memory? I am thinking about tagging every bar now.
That thing about grabbing the wrong steel out of the bin is exactly why I started keeping mine on a rack with tags. I saw a knifemaker on YouTube say he paints the end of every bar a different color, so even in bad light you know what you have. Sounds like more work up front but way less than redoing a whole batch.
