Got yelled at by a retired farrier at a hammer-in last spring

I was at a hammer-in outside of Nashville and this old guy watched me dress a hammer face for like 2 minutes before he walked over and told me I was grinding away all the good steel. He showed me how to just stone it lightly and keep more material on there. Made me realize I'd been wasting hours of work every time I touched a grinder to a hammer. Anybody else get their whole technique flipped by some random stranger?

My uncle was a retired auto body guy and he did the same thing to me when I was sanding down a truck panel. He grabbed the sandpaper right out of my hand and showed me how to use a block and just feather the edges instead of going at it like a maniac. Took me from ruining door panels to actually getting paint to lay flat. Funny how the old guys always have a better way.

You ever think you got it all figured out until some old timer shows you the easy way and makes you feel like a total rookie? I used to think sanding was just about brute force and elbow grease, but once I tried feathering with a block instead of attacking the panel, everything changed. It's wild how slowing down and doing it right actually saves time in the long run.
