Wasted $200 on a 'premium' anvil that was just rebranded cast iron
Bought it off a guy on Facebook Marketplace who swore it was forged steel. Found out after my first hammer hit left a dent that it was just cheap cast iron with a thick paint job. Anyone else dealt with fake anvils from online sellers?

Who swore it was forged steel" ... yeah, I think that part gets a lot of people. The thing is, cast iron anvils actually have their place if you're doing light work like jewelry or small silversmithing, but they're absolutely not for blacksmithing or heavy hammer blows. The giveaway is usually the ring test - a forged steel anvil will ring clear and hold that tone, while cast iron goes "thunk" and dies fast. Also, look for the little circular mold marks around the base, real forged anvils won't have those. You probably already know this now, but always ask for a video of someone hitting it with a hammer before you buy, or better yet, bring a ball bearing and see if it bounces right off. Sorry you got burned on that one, happens way too often with Marketplace.
