Best game night ever vs worst game night ever

Had a game night last Saturday that was pure magic. Four of us played Wingspan and everyone got into it no arguments or phones. Then Monday I tried the same group with a new game called Dune Imperium. Total disaster. One guy rage quit after 30 minutes because he said the rules were too complicated. Do you find that lighter games work better for big groups or do you push through the heavy stuff?

The real issue isn't light vs heavy games, it's about knowing your group's tolerance for learning curves. Wingspan has a gentle learning curve with clear goals. Dune Imperium throws a ton of mechanics at you all at once, which works for some groups but not others. You gotta read the room before picking what to pull out. Some people just want to roll dice and laugh, others want to plan out their next three moves. Both are fine as long as you match the game to the people sitting at the table.

hugos67 is right, but Wingspan's learning curve isn't always that gentle for new players.
