My buddy in Cincinnati insisted we play his new 4-hour war game during our lunch break.

We got through one turn in 90 minutes and had to pack it up, leaving the map on my dining table for a week. Does anyone else have a friend who completely misjudges how long a game will take?

Your buddy was probably just excited to share something he loves. A 90 minute first turn shows you were all learning the rules together, which is part of the fun. Maybe the real issue was trying to squeeze any new game into a short lunch break. Could you plan a proper game night instead?

Yeah, we had a similar thing happen with a new game. What saved us was watching a quick how-to-play video together before we even opened the box. It cut our setup and first turn time in half, so we could actually enjoy playing.

We had a game of Catan that went like that once. Total mess. Now we make the person who owns the game do a full practice round by themselves first. They walk us through their turn step by step before we even deal cards. It sounds silly but it saves so much time staring at the rulebook later.
