Vent: our game night group voted 7 to 4 to ban house rules, and I think that killed the fun
Three weeks ago at my place in Columbus, we wrapped a five hour session of Twilight Imperium and someone finally said out loud what half the table was thinking, that house rules were making games drag. So last Saturday we voted 7 to 4 to play everything strictly by the book, no exceptions, no bending a rule to keep someone from getting wiped out in round two. By 9pm two people had already packed up and left because a bad draw buried them with no way back in, and nobody at the table looked like they were having a good time. I get wanting balance and no arguing over interpretations, but a game night where three people sit dead for two hours is a worse outcome than a slightly loose rule here and there. Has anyone else's group gone strict and regretted it, or am I just wrong on this one?
So you're telling me a group of adults in Columbus looked at a five hour game of Twilight Imperium and thought, yeah, the problem here was too much fun. Seven to four is not a vote, that's a hostage situation with extra steps. Here's the thing though, going full by the book sounds great until someone's home planet gets glassed in round two because of one bad card draw, and then you're just hosting a two hour podcast for three bored people. A game night is supposed to be a game night, not a live demo of why the rulebook has a bunch of edge cases nobody wants to deal with. House rules exist because designers can't test every table of four to eight tired adults at 9pm on a Saturday. Your group didn't fix the arguing, they just traded it for silence and empty chairs.
