Debate: Should you preheat your patch rods or keep them cold?

I always preheat my patch rods for about 20 seconds before welding, seems to get a better fusion on dirty steel. But this old hand I met on a job in Baton Rouge swore cold rods worked just as well and saved time. What's your take on this - heat 'em up or leave 'em alone?

Cold rods work just fine, you're just wasting 20 seconds on superstition.

Preach, I've used rods straight out of the truck and never noticed a difference either.
