I laughed at the old-timer who said to preheat my plate before welding overhead, but after 3 drips into my hood I gave it a shot.

The first weld after preheating stuck clean and I didn't get a single drop on my neck, has anyone else had a simple trick like that they ignored for way too long?

Six months? Man, that is way too long to suffer.

Honestly I remember the first time a buddy told me to tack a piece of scrap to the bench and weld onto it to absorb heat, and I thought he was nuts. Took me about six months and a ruined flange before I actually tried it, and now I do it every single time on anything thin. What was the thing that finally made you give the plate preheating a go was it just the neck burns or did you have a specific job that pushed you over the edge? Sometimes the old dudes are just looking out for us even if they sound like they're telling ghost stories.
