Spent 4 hours fighting a misaligned header flange on a 3406E
Was working on a CAT 3406E in a shop over off Route 12 near Springfield. The header flange just would not sit flush no matter how I torqued it. Turned out a bolt hole was stripped from the previous guy using a impact on it. Had to helicoil the damn thing at 3 PM on a Friday, which pushed my whole timeline.

Bet you didn't actually check the bolt hole before you started slamming bolts in, did you. I've seen guys skip the thread chaser step and then blame the truck for their own shortcut. Helicoils are fine, but that 3 PM Friday panic job probably means you overtightened it again and next week you'll be pulling the whole header off.

Once you start paying attention, you notice that same "helped myself into a corner" pattern everywhere. It's not just in engine work, it's in home repairs, computer builds, even relationships where people skip the small steps and then act shocked when the big thing breaks. @caseyl18 nailed the root cause, rushing the prep work to save ten minutes always costs an hour later on. That stripped hole didn't happen overnight, it was a dozen small shortcuts adding up until someone had to fix it on a Friday. The whole industry runs on that cycle of quick fixes that create bigger problems down the road. Ever notice how the guys who take time to clean and check everything rarely have these emergency calls?
