Upgraded my old gouge set after 8 years and it felt like cheating

Finally swapped out my beat up set from when I started apprenticing for a new one from a tool truck last month. Did a full boiler tube prep with it yesterday and finished nearly 40 minutes early, anyone else hold onto worn gear way too long thinking it's still fine?

Man I felt this in my soul. I had my first set of leveling jacks for like 10 years before I finally caved and got new ones. When I put them on, everything just felt so smooth and tight, it was night and day. I used to think the slop was just normal wear and I was compensating without even realizing it. Now I tell the young guys to not be afraid to upgrade once the tool tells you it's time. Saves so much time and frustration in the long run.

Yeah but how do you know when it's actually the tool worn out versus you just getting used to it and compensating? I feel like that line gets real blurry sometimes.
