I picked the hardcover over the paperback for our book club pick

So my book club was split on whether to read the new fantasy series in hardcover or save cash with paperback. I went with hardcover because the maps are bigger and it feels sturdier for passing around. Now two members are complaining about the weight when they carry it in their bags. Has anyone else had this debate go sideways in their group?

actually hold on, isn't hardcover usually heavier than paperback anyway? i feel like that's kind of the deal with hardcovers. they're built to last and look nice on a shelf but they definitely weigh more. your friends probably should have known that going in. i've been in a similar spot where my group wanted the pretty edition but then complained about carrying it around, and it just seemed like nobody thought it through. did you guys talk about the tradeoffs before you picked? sometimes that helps avoid the grumbling later.

Honestly, is it really that deep though? It's just a book, right? Like yeah it's heavy but you get used to it after a day or two.
