Our book club read a classic vs a modern take on the same genre and the difference was huge

We did a back-to-back reading of a 1980s sci-fi novel and a 2020 one. The older book spent 50 pages describing a spaceship, while the new one jumped right into the plot from page one. Has anyone else noticed how pacing has changed that much between decades?

Does your book club ever fight over that stuff? My buddy loaned me two crime novels once, one from the 70s and one from last year. Old one had a whole chapter about the detective's broken coffee maker before anyone even got murdered. New one started with a body in the first paragraph and never slowed down. I kinda liked both but for totally different reasons.

Totally feel you on that @samward, the pacing difference is wild between old and new crime novels, but somehow they both work in their own way.
