Showerthought: our book club picked a 700 page novel and only 3 people finished it
We met at Dana's place on Sunday and the whole thing fell apart, half the group admitted around page 200 they just read the summary online. I felt bad because I was the one who pushed for it, so now I'm wondering if we should do a page limit rule before voting. Anyone else deal with this, and did you ever just switch to shorter books to keep people showing up?
Man, this is just like every group project I've ever been in, where two people do all the work and everyone else shows up on presentation day acting like they read the whole thing. Or potlucks where three people actually cook and the rest bring store-bought cookies and call it even. People love to say yes to things and then quietly bail when the effort part shows up. A page limit is smart, honestly, because it's not about the book being bad, it's about setting everyone up to actually finish. Pick something under 300 pages and watch how fast the discussion gets better.
