The book club dictionary we never built cost us 4 meetings
Our club spent 3 months arguing about whether a character was 'reckless' or 'driven'. Then last week someone pulled up a published literary glossary and showed us that critics use 'ambiguous' for a reason. It wasn't the character, it was that we all had different definitions. I looked it up on Wikipedia at 1am and found that literary terms can shift meaning by era and region. That single fact would have saved us four entire discussions. Has anyone else had a book club derail because you didn't agree on definitions before picking apart a novel?
