Why I think 'Gone Girl' is overrated and no one wants to hear it
I told my Chicago book club last month that I thought the twist in Gone Girl was kind of silly and they all looked at me like I'd insulted their grandma. One lady named Carol actually put her wine glass down and said 'you're missing the point' before anyone else could speak. I stuck to my opinion and we ended up having a pretty heated debate for 20 minutes before the host changed the subject to snacks. Has anyone else pushed back on a popular book and had the whole room turn on you?

Stopped defending that book myself after seeing someone get grilled about it at a party last year. Started out thinking the twist was clever but lately I can't even remember the ending without rolling my eyes. Carol sounds like she was ready to throw hands over a book she probably read once on a flight. The way people act like you're attacking their whole personality when you criticize a popular novel is wild to me.

Is it really the book they're mad about or just the fact that you didn't like what they liked?
