I finally learned why my book cloth keeps bubbling on the spine

For three months I fought with bubbly book cloth on every rebind I did. Turns out the issue was my PVA glue was too thin, and the moisture was soaking into the paper liner underneath. I read about this in a 1980s edition of the Guild of Book Workers newsletter at my local library. I switched to a thicker paste and let the cloth rest for 10 minutes before wrapping. Has anyone else had this problem with thinner adhesives, or do you use a different method to prevent the cloth from lifting?

Honestly I always thought thinner glue was better for book cloth but now Im second guessing every project Ive done. I never even thought about the liner soaking up the moisture like that. Might need to try the rest time thing too cause my last couple spines have been lifting on the edges.
