Unpopular take on that famous '10,000 steps' goal

I kept hearing that 10,000 steps a day was the magic number for health. But I looked into where that number came from, and it's not from any real study or doctor. It was actually a marketing gimmick from a Japanese pedometer company in the 1960s. The original name of the device roughly translated to '10,000 step meter' and it just stuck. So I stopped stressing about hitting that exact count and now I just focus on moving more, even if it's 6,000 steps or so. Has anyone else found a lower step count that actually worked for them?

Buddy of mine swears by 7,000 and feels better than ever.

Funny enough, I tried chasing that 10,000 step mark and my Fitbit basically called the paramedics on me after a week of it. Now I just aim for "more than yesterday" and call it a win.
