TIL I was watering my orchids all wrong for 5 years

I've been killing one orchid after another for years, thinking I was just bad with plants. Then my neighbor saw me pouring water directly onto the leaves and roots last Saturday and nearly had a heart attack. She showed me the ice cube trick on the top layer of bark instead. Three months later my orchid has a new spike. Did anyone else learn basic care way later than they want to admit?

That ice cube trick works but I gotta ask - how did you not notice the leaves getting mushy and yellow after dumping water straight on them for that long? Did you just figure orchids are supposed to look sad and droopy all the time?

Three ice cubes a week and I thought droopy was just how orchids show affection.
