Dropped $210 on drilled and slotted rotors for my Civic, and the pads ate them alive in 8 months
Bought the fancy drilled and slotted set for my 2014 Civic last spring because the guy at the parts counter in Columbus swore they'd run cooler and last longer, and I figured $210 was worth it over the $85 blanks. What he didn't say is that drilled rotors chew through pads way faster and mine were metal on metal by 8 months, so I was out the rotors, a new set of pads, and a Saturday in the driveway. Is there any real gain from drilled rotors on a car that never sees a track, or did I just pay double to replace brakes sooner?
Honestly used to be one of those guys who thought drilled rotors just looked cool and that was enough reason to buy them. After watching a buddy go through two sets of pads in a year on his daily, I changed my mind fast. On a street car that never sees a track, the holes just give the pad material somewhere to get chewed up, and the slots shave it down even quicker. Real talk, blanks are the move for a Civic that just commutes and hits the occasional red light pull. You basically paid extra to do brakes twice as often.
