Used to buy bagged salad every week, now I chop everything myself

About three months ago I added up what I was spending on those pre-made salad bags and it was like $8 a week just for lettuce. That's over $400 a year for basically a bag of chopped leaves. Now I buy a head of romaine for like $1.50 and spend 5 minutes washing and cutting it myself. For the shredded carrots I just buy a whole bag of carrots for $2 and shred them once a week. Has anyone else cut out a pre-packaged item and noticed a big difference in their grocery bill?

It's funny how those little conveniences add up without you even noticing until you run the numbers. Once you start questioning one packaged item, it kind of snowballs into looking at everything else in your cart the same way. Pretty soon you realize half the stuff you buy is just paying someone else to do the easy prep work.

Three dollars for a bag of pre-shredded cheese was my wake-up call, even though grating a block myself takes maybe 90 seconds (and gives my arm a tiny workout I apparently need).
