My $300 flight vs my friend's $900 train trip to Montreal last month

I booked a round trip from Newark to Montreal for $300 on a basic airline ticket, while my buddy paid $900 for a VIA Rail ticket from New York. He thought trains were more relaxing, but his 11-hour ride took longer than my 90-minute flight plus security, and he still had to pay for meals onboard. Has anyone else found that trains end up costing way more than you'd expect for a short trip?
