My flight to Denver got canceled and I saved $300 by doing this

This happened last month when my direct flight to Denver was axed at the last minute. The airline offered me a rebooking for the next day, but I called them and asked for a refund instead. I then booked a flight to Colorado Springs for $180, which was $300 cheaper than the new Denver flights they were selling. I took a $25 shuttle from the Springs airport straight into downtown Denver. The whole detour only added about two hours to my trip. Has anyone else had luck with flying into a cheaper nearby city when their plans fall apart?

Did you factor in the extra time and hassle? For me, that shuttle ride after a long travel day would wipe out any savings. I'd rather pay more for the direct solution and be done with it.

Totally get that. Sometimes your time is worth more than the cash you save.
