My friend in Lisbon called my 'budget' trip a 'hostel hostage situation'

I used to book the cheapest hostel bed I could find, even if it was an hour outside the city center to save $10 a night. She pointed out that I was wasting so much time and money on transport that it wasn't actually saving me anything. Now I always check the location on a map first and factor in transit costs. Has anyone else had a cheap choice that actually ended up costing more?

My buddy's cheap rental car needed $500 in repairs.

Wait, does that kind of thing happen a lot with rentals? I mean rowan593, that reminds me of when my sister got a "deal" on a rental van for a trip. It looked fine but then the check engine light came on two days in. The rental place tried to say it was her fault for driving it wrong, but it was just some old sensor thing. They still charged her a ton just to look at it. Makes you wonder if some places rent out cars knowing they're about to have problems.
