Just realized the 50/30/20 rule assumes you have a steady paycheck

I was reading a finance blog last Tuesday and it hit me that the 50/30/20 split only works if your income stays flat, but I do freelance gig work where my take home swings between $2,800 and $4,500 a month. That means my fixed costs eat up way more than 50% in slow months, so I had to build a three tier budget based on my rolling 3 month average instead. Does anyone else with irregular income just toss the 50/30/20 thing out the window, or have you found a better ratio that actually fits the ups and downs?

Take any money advice as a starting point, then bend it to fit your real life, not the other way around.
