My $3.99 'budget' spice blend that cost me a full brisket

Last weekend I grabbed this off-brand chili powder from the discount rack at a grocery store in Tulsa because it was only $3.99. Seemed like a win for my monthly food budget. I used it on a 12 pound brisket I'd been saving for a family dinner. Whole thing came out tasting like cardboard and sadness. Nobody ate more than two bites. I ended up ordering pizza for everyone. So I basically paid $40 for a stupid spice mistake. Has anyone else lost a whole meal trying to save like 2 bucks?

dude i did the exact same thing with a "bargain" jar of adobo seasoning from a discount store. ruined a whole pork shoulder i had been marinading for like 18 hours. now i just stick to the basic spices i know work, like straight up cumin and smoked paprika. seriously, buying whole spices and grinding them yourself is way cheaper in the long run and you dont risk losing a $40 cut of meat lol.

Had a buddy from work named Dave who did something similar with a jar of generic curry powder he grabbed from a dollar store. He marinated a whole leg of lamb for 24 hours, roasted it, and it came out tasting like dusty chalk mixed with regret. He ended up chopping it up and feeding it to his dog just to not waste it. @sethb45 is right about whole spices being the way to go, Dave learned that the hard way and now he drives twenty minutes to a real spice shop.
