Heard two founders argue about hiring speed at a coffee shop in Austin
I was grabbing coffee last week and two guys at the next table were really going at it. One guy, who runs a tech startup, said he hires fast and fires faster, claiming it's the only way to scale before you run out of cash. The other guy, who has a service business, said that method wrecked his company culture and he lost three good people because of one bad, fast hire. The tech founder shot back, 'If you wait for the perfect fit, you'll miss the whole market window.' It got me thinking hard about my own small team. I've always leaned toward being careful, but maybe that's slowing us down. What's the better play for growth right now: speed to fill seats, or holding out for the right person even if it means projects stall?

That line about wrecking company culture really hit home. I've seen a single rushed hire poison team morale for months, and rebuilding trust takes forever. But I also get the fear of missing your market window while you're waiting. For my money, a bad hire costs more in lost time and momentum than an empty seat does.
