Why does nobody talk about the customer who pays late being your best teacher?
I run a small print and design shop in Tacoma and I used to think chasing invoices was just part of the job. About 8 months ago I had a client who owed me $2,400 and went quiet for 6 weeks. I was mad at first, then I sat down and looked at my whole process. I found out I never asked for a deposit upfront and I never set clear pay dates in writing. That one late client made me rewrite how I take on work. Now I ask for half down before I even open the file, and I put the due date right on the invoice in bold. Funny thing is, the clients who pay on time actually like it because they know exactly what to expect. My cash flow got way steadier after that, and I stopped spending my Fridays sending awkward reminder emails. Anyone else change their whole payment setup because of one bad apple, or do you just eat the loss and move on?
