Shoutout to the ISP tech in Boise who showed me why my backup line died every storm
I run a small print shop and we pay for a second internet line just for card payments, and last month during a storm it dropped for the third time in six weeks. I was ready to switch providers and blame the gear, but the tech who came out showed me our backup router was plugged into a power strip shared with a space heater near the door, so every brownout killed both at once. He moved it to the UPS in the back room, said the words 'heaters and routers do not share a strip,' and we have not dropped since. I was wrong about the provider being the problem. Has anyone else found their 'redundant' setup was just two things plugged into the same weak spot?
Heaters and routers do not share a strip" sounds like great wisdom until you realize the tech basically told you to plug your backup line into one UPS that also dies when its battery runs out. A real redundant setup means the router sits on its own battery backup AND the ISP gear in the box down the street has battery too, otherwise a long outage takes you down anyway. Also how do you know the heater was the only problem? Storms cause voltage drops all over, so the strip may have just been the first weak link, not the whole story. Blaming yourself because a guy moved one plug feels like a cheap fix that will bite you again the next time the power goes out for six hours.
