PSA: My brisket almost went up in flames at a cook-off in Memphis

Ever think a fire extinguisher was overkill? I did. Saw a grease fire at a tailgate last year. Changed my mind real fast.

My CEO asked me 'what does that even mean?' after reading our new mission statement

I wrote a whole team charter last year full of phrases like "synergistic workflows" and "value-added outcomes." My old boss loved it, but new management asked me to explain it to a new hire and I just froze. Now I keep a sticky note that says "would my dad get this?" on my monitor. That one question changed how I write everything at work. Plain language isn't lazy, it's respectful. Your CEO might be doing you a favor even if it feels rough right now.

A foreman in St. Louis called me out on my weld prep last month

Yeah, "doomed from the start" is right, @kelly.parker. I had the same thing happen with my travel speed on a fillet weld, felt like an idiot when I slowed down.

Okay, I heard a guy at the diner yesterday say that all boring jobs are basically the same and you should just zone out. I completely disagree.

Hold on, you're missing the point. That guy is right. Most boring jobs are just about putting in the hours, not your brain. Your permit thing is a one-off mistake, not the rule. For tons of people, their work is just moving data from one box to another. It's soul crushing to pretend every single line matters. If you can autopilot through the mind numbing parts and save your energy, you should. Why burn yourself out on stuff a computer could probably do?

Warning: I was using way too much glue on my headbands

My grandma's 1970s cookbook says a pea-sized dab of shampoo is enough for long hair.
