I finally fixed my washing machine after making it worse twice

My washer stopped spinning and I thought it was the belt. I bought a $15 belt online and spent 2 hours wrestling it on, but it still didn't work. Then I watched a YouTube video that said to check the lid switch first. I took the old belt back off, found a broken wire on the switch, and fixed it with electrical tape. Whole thing cost me nothing and now it spins fine. Anyone else skip the simple stuff and go straight for the hard fix?

Screwed up my fridge ice maker three times before realizing I forgot to flip the water line valve.

Did you at least get to use the swear words you saved up for the belt? I did the exact same thing with my dryer once, replaced the heating element twice before realizing the thermal fuse was blown. That $5 part sat in my junk drawer for a month while I cussed out the dryer gods. Now I always start by checking the cheapest, simplest thing first. But I still end up fixing stuff three times before I get it right, so maybe I'm not the best role model here.
