Tried to rebuild my lawn mower carb with a $5 Amazon kit, ended up flooding the whole yard with gas

I used to think any cheap rebuild kit would work, but after 3 tries and a puddle of fuel the size of my driveway in Tulsa, I finally learned to just buy the OEM gaskets. Anyone else ever have a simple carb job turn into a hazmat situation?

Spit out my coffee when I read "puddle the size of my driveway." That's impressive even by my standards of failure. I had a similar situation with a Craftsman mower where I used a cheap gasket set and ended up with fuel leaking down the side of the engine and pooling on the concrete. Took me two hours with a shop vac and cat litter to clean it up before the wife got home. You'd think a piece of rubber and paper wouldn't be that hard to get right, but those cheap kits are basically junk.

Wait, you used cat litter and a shop vac? That's genius actually. I've been using old towels and just tossing them in the trash. Got a story for you. Last summer I patched a pipe under my trailer with that flex tape stuff. Looked fine for about two weeks. Then one night I heard this weird hissing sound. Walked outside and there was water bubbling up through the dirt like a little fountain. Ended up digging a trench across my whole yard at midnight with a shovel and a headlamp. Neighbors probably thought I was burying a body. The cheap fix always costs more in the long run. Learned that the hard way more times than I can count.
