Just realized I've been sanding my edge banding all wrong for years

I was working on a set of shelves for a client in Boulder last week and kept getting this fuzzy look on the edges after I stained them. I figured it was just cheap banding or my iron wasn't hot enough. Turns out I was sanding with too coarse of a grit and going against the grain on the glue line. A buddy from the local woodshop came by and showed me how a light pass with 220 grit at a 45 degree angle gets rid of the glue squeeze out without messing up the surface. Now my edges come out smooth and I don't have to redo half my joints. Has anyone else had trouble with edge banding looking rough after finishing?

My buddy Mike ruined a whole bookshelf in his shop doing this.

A proper setup shouldn't have that problem at all.
