Showerthought: I fixed a camera for free for a sentimental reason, and the other techs think I'm wrong.

A customer brought in his grandpa's vintage camera, totally busted but with HUGE emotional value. He had no cash to pay for the work, so I did the fix on my own time. The guys I work with say I should ALWAYS charge or turn the job down. I disagree because our job isn't just about money, it's about keeping memories alive. That choice actually brought me more loyal customers later on.

My buddy did a free brake fix for a kid's first bike. That family now brings all their repair work to his shop.

Free bike tune-up for a kid made them LOYAL, @angelapalmer.

Totally get why you did that. Fixed an old music box for a neighbor once, no charge. It was her only thing from her mom. She cried when it played again. Now her whole street calls me for every little fix. That good feeling and the future business are worth way more than one bill.
