Hot take: I used to defend every canceled person I liked, now I wait 48 hours before typing anything
Back in 2021 I went to bat for a local musician in Portland within like an hour of the first callout post going up, wrote a whole paragraph in his comments about how the screenshots looked edited. Two days later the second wave came out with receipts I never saw, and I had to quietly delete my comment while three people quoted it back at me. Now when someone I follow gets dragged, I just bookmark the thread and check back after 2 days, because that first wave almost never has the full story and the second wave is where the actual facts show up. Went from posting hot takes in under an hour to sitting on my hands for two days minimum, and honestly it saved me from looking dumb at least 4 times since. Anyone else here changed how fast they react, or do you still jump in on day one?
I was the same way for years, and it was that Wilbur Soot thing in early 2024 that finally flipped the switch for me. I had already typed out a whole defense paragraph in my notes app by lunchtime on day one (this was before I learned better obviously), and then the next morning the receipts dropped and I felt like the biggest clown on the internet. The part that got me was how confident I felt in that first hour, like there was no way I was wrong, and then boom, proven wrong in front of everyone. So now I do the exact same thing you do, bookmark it, walk away, come back in 48 hours, and the number of times I would have been dead wrong is honestly embarrassing to count. Waiting two days doesn't mean you stop caring, it just means you wait until you actually know something before you open your mouth.
