My cousin told me that old tweet from 2012 wouldn't come back to bite her

She was a college junior when she posted something dumb about a celebrity, and last year someone dug it up and screenshotted it to her boss. Lost a job offer over a 13 year old joke. Has anyone else seen old stuff surface at the worst time?

Did you delete it right after or just leave it up like an idiot? I had the same thing happen with a tweet from 2011 where I called some musician a hack. Thought nobody would ever see it again. Fast forward to 2019 and a recruiter found it during a background check for a job I really wanted. They asked me about it in the interview and I literally turned red and stumbled through some excuse about being young and stupid. Didn't get the job. Now I go through my old accounts maybe twice a year and nuke anything that could be remotely offensive. It's insane how one stupid post from over a decade ago can still mess up your life.

Read that a study found something like 70% of employers check social media during the hiring process. Makes me wonder how much stuff from my early 20s is still floating around out there. Honestly a good reminder to go scrub through my old accounts this weekend.
