My group chat turned on me after I shared a clip of that professor's old lecture
Last Tuesday I dropped a 40 second clip in our group chat of a professor saying something dumb at a talk back in 2016, and by Thursday two people in that chat had screenshotted it and sent it to his department. I didn't ask for that and I said so, but one guy shot back 'you posted it, you own it' and now I'm the one getting the cold shoulder at pickup. The professor lost a speaking gig over it and posted an apology that I honestly think he didn't need to write. I deleted the clip and asked the chat to stop passing it around, which went about as well as you'd guess. Where's the line between sharing a clip and starting the whole pile-on? Would you have told the guy to take it down or stayed out of it?
