Rant: I got dragged online for a joke at a Portland open mic and I still think the crowd was wrong, not me
Two weeks ago I did a five minute set at an open mic in Portland, and I told a joke about my own family that got maybe four laughs and one really loud boo from a table up front. By the next morning a clip of that boo had 200k views on some local account, and people in the comments were calling me a creep and saying I should never get stage time again. Here is the part nobody wants to hear: the joke was about my own dad, who passed in 2019, and he is the one who taught me to laugh at hard stuff in the first place. I get that comedy can hurt people, but this was a room of about 30 people who paid nothing to get in, and half of them were comics waiting their turn. Some guy I have never met messaged my boss at the warehouse and tried to get me fired over it, which feels way past any kind of fair response. I am not saying the boo was wrong, crowds can hate whatever they want, but turning one bad minute into a whole campaign against my job feels insane to me. Where do you all draw the line between someone bombing and someone deserving the pile on?
