Warning: hit 200k miles on my $900 Accord and found out the hard way why you check the timing belt
Hit 200,017 miles last Friday on a 1996 Accord I picked up in Akron for $900, and the belt let go 40 miles later because I trusted the PO's word instead of pulling the cover. Anyone else learn the timing belt lesson the expensive way, or am I the only one who gambles on a $30 part?
How bad did it bend the valves? I ask because mine ate every single one when the belt snapped on my old Civic, and I still had to pay for a tow on top of it. The real kick in the teeth is that a timing belt costs less than dinner for two, and I still rolled the dice on somebody's word. My guy swore up and down it was done at 90k, and I nodded along like a genius because pulling a cover takes ten minutes I didn't feel like spending. Ten minutes, a flashlight, maybe a crack in the belt you can spot from a mile away, and I skipped all of it. So no, you are not the only gambler, and we both lost to a part that costs less than a tank of gas.
