Just realized I used to know my car loan balance to the penny, now I have to dig through email to find it
Back when I signed the papers at the dealer in 2021, I had that $347.82 payment memorized and could tell you my exact payoff down to the cent. Moving to online banking killed that for me because everything just comes out on autopilot and I stopped looking. Is anyone else weirdly less on top of their loan now that it's all automatic, or am I the only one who lost track?
My wife still tracks every penny of our Honda loan on a spread sheet she updates the first of the month, and honestly she sleeps better than anyone I know. Autopilot is great right up until the bank messes up the escrow or applies a payment wrong and you don't catch it for three months. I get why people stop looking, the money just leaves and life goes on, but that's exactly how you end up calling customer service and finding out your payoff is $800 higher than you thought. Knowing your number isn't being weird, it's being awake. The auto pay isn't the enemy, not checking it is.
