Vent: It took me 4 months and 11 phone calls to get my old lender to fix a $2,800 payoff error
Back in January I paid off my car loan early, or so I figured. The payoff quote said $2,800 and change, I sent the cashier's check from my credit union in Grand Rapids, and I waited for the title. Two weeks go by, nothing. Then a letter shows up saying I still owed $612. Turns out the payoff quote they mailed me was stale by nine days, so interest kept piling up after the date on the paper even though the check cleared before it. I called customer service and got told three different things by three different reps, one of them swore the extra was a late fee, which made no sense since I had auto pay the whole time. What finally broke it loose was filing a complaint with the state banking regulator in Lansing and attaching screenshots of the payoff letter, the check image, and my call log. About three weeks after that a manager called me directly and wiped the $612 and sent the title by FedEx. So yeah, small win I guess, but four months of my life for their mistake. Anyone else had luck going the regulator route, or did you just pay the wrong number to make it go away?
Man, the regulator route is the only thing that got my old bank to move too. I had a bogus $400 fee sit there for two months until I filed with the state and suddenly they found a "system error" real quick. Worth the paperwork every time, because paying it just to make it go away teaches them they can keep doing it.
