My boss told me my reports read like a grocery list so I had to rethink everything

Last month my manager said my sales data summaries were just numbers with no story, so I started adding a one-sentence takeaway at the top of each sheet. Has anyone else had to change how they present information after getting blunt feedback like that?

Are you sure this is really that big of a deal though? I mean, a grocery list gets the job done if you know what you're looking at. Adding a takeaway at the top sounds fine, but it also sounds like your boss is just being dramatic. Sometimes managers act like everything needs to be some big creative project when really people just want the facts.

Have you ever had to read through a bunch of numbers with no clue what they actually mean? A grocery list might be fine for picking up milk, but for work it just leaves people guessing what matters. Adding a quick summary upfront saves everyone time and makes your boss see your point right away.
