That $140 gamble is exactly why I only mess with certain electrical stuff from junkyards. Sensors, switches, even the alternator and starter are usually safe bets since you can test those with a multimeter right there in the lot. But ECUs are a whole different animal, too many hidden failure points and the immobilizer programming makes it almost pointless unless you get super lucky. I did the same thing with a BCM from a Corolla once, car started but the power locks went haywire and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. Ended up spending more time chasing the gremlins than I saved on the part. Now I treat any computer module from a junkyard as a core for rebuilders, not a direct replacement.

My buddy does the same thing with fancy dice sets for D&D, buys them for the art and then grabs the same plain set every session cause it's already in his bag. I noticed it's like buying a nice kitchen gadget, the thrill is owning it, not actually using it.

And that's the thing, isn't it. We get so locked into our own view of things after hours of staring at the same piece of steel that we start seeing what we expect to see, not what's actually there. I've seen it happen with my own eyes on framing jobs too, where a guy swears a wall is plumb because he's checked it three times, but the laser says otherwise. It's not about being a bad worker, it's about being human. The ones who make it in this trade are the ones who can swallow their pride and listen to the guy with the fresh eyes. Saves a whole lot of pain down the road.

You ever see a grown man kick a perfectly good toolbox across a parking lot? Buddy of mine did the same thing last spring on 75. Bought the cheap line, slapped it on, figured the rusty clip was fine. Six weeks later he's doing 55 and the line rubs through on the frame. Brake pedal goes straight to the floor. He coasted into a ditch, lucky it was grass and not a guardrail. Took him a full weekend to replace the line again and patch the frame rail where it wore through. Swears by OEM brackets now, checks every single one with a flashlight before he bleeds anything. Said the extra 20 bucks is cheaper than a tow truck and a new pair of pants.
