Giving a sincere compliment actually got me better service than any complaint ever did

I had this issue with my internet provider where my bill jumped $25 for no reason. I called in ready to fight like everyone says you should. But instead of yelling, I started by thanking the guy for his patience and said I knew he probably dealt with angry people all day. He actually paused and said nobody had ever thanked him before. He ended up finding a loyalty discount that dropped my bill $30 below what it was originally. Has anyone else tried being genuinely nice instead of going in hot? I know it sounds soft but it worked way better than I expected.

My buddy Mike had his car rental totally messed up last summer in Phoenix. They gave him a sedan instead of the SUV he booked and the AC barely worked. He was fuming in the parking lot but then this older lady from the counter came out smoking a cigarette looking totally done with life. He just said "rough day huh" and she unloaded about how two people had screamed at her that morning. He listened for like five minutes then she walked him back in. Upgraded him to a brand new Tahoe for free and gave him a full tank of gas. He still talks about it.

Ha, I usually just end up making things worse when I try to be nice!
