My uncle the electrician told me to quit taking notes on my first sales job

He said I was wasting time writing down every single product spec and should just listen to what the customer is actually complaining about. Tried it for a week on the road visiting hardware stores in Ohio and my closing rate went up about 30%. Has anyone else had someone call them out on a bad habit that was actually holding them back?

Nah man I actually think the note taking is what makes you stand out. Customers notice when you're genuinely trying to remember their specific problems and it shows you care. Just gotta balance it with actually LISTENING instead of writing EVERYTHING down.

Blairm35's point about balance is spot on. One time a barista at my local shop remembered I take oat milk in my coffee after she jotted it down once, and that small thing made me a regular. Writing stuff down shows you care, but if you're scribbling while they're talking, you're definitely missing half the story.
