Pro tip: I quit nursing for HVAC at 41 and my take home pay jumped $400 a month after 18 months
I worked nights in a hospital in Dayton for 12 years and was pulling about $2,900 a month after taxes. I finished a 9 month HVAC program at a trade school, took a pay cut at first, and now I run service calls for a small shop and clear around $3,300 a month plus overtime. The weird part is I sleep normal hours now and my back stopped hurting from lifting patients. Anyone else here switch from healthcare to a trade, and how long did it take before the money felt worth it?

Reading stuff like this always makes me think about how we got sold this whole idea that the only way up is more school, more debt, more letters after your name. Meanwhile the guy who fixes your AC in August makes more than the guy who checks your blood pressure, and people act shocked by that. It's the same pattern with plumbers, electricians, welders, all these jobs everyone's parents said would never pay enough. Somewhere along the way we started treating work with your hands as a step down instead of just a different road. Ten years ago you'd get laughed at for saying ditch the hospital for a trade, and now it's the smart move because the math finally made it obvious. Good on you for figuring it out before your body made the choice for you.
