Rant: I used to think a 3-inch crown was overkill for a kitchen remodel
Did a job in a 1910s house in Portland last month where the client insisted on a 4-inch crown. I mocked up a sample and the scale was perfect with the 10-foot ceilings. My old 2.5-inch standard looked cheap next to it. Anyone else find themselves sizing up trim in older homes?

Absolutely. Did a full trim package in a 1920s bungalow last year, eight-foot ceilings. Put in a beefy 5-inch baseboard and a 3.5-inch door casing. The old skinny stuff we pulled out looked like dollhouse trim by comparison. It just makes the whole room feel solid.

Totally agree with @nina_butler... that beefier scale just anchors everything. Did the same in my own place with a 6-inch base and it changed the whole feel of the room. The old trim really does look like toothpicks once you see it.
