Appreciation post: That Wednesday job in Phoenix that went sideways then perfect
Last month I showed up to a house in Phoenix where the homeowner had moved all the furniture but left a huge bookshelf in the middle of the living room. I almost lost it, but the guy came out and said just cut around it because it's bolted to the floor. So I did a seam right where the shelf sits, and it literally disappeared under there. Then the carpet padding was already glued down perfectly straight, which never happens. Has anyone else had a job unexpectedly go from frustrating to flawless like that?

Flip that around and ask yourself if the seam really disappeared or if you just told yourself it did to feel better about taking the shortcut. Cutting around a bookshelf because someone bolted it down is basically admitting you couldn't talk them into moving it, and now there's a hidden seam that's gonna pop up the second that shelf shifts or gets removed. The padding being glued straight just means the last guy was a pro, not that you got lucky, so really you just coasted on someone else's good work and called it a win.

Doesn't the seam situation really depend on the room? I've done jobs where a bookcase sat in the same spot for 20 years and nobody ever moved it. If the seam's hidden and stable, that's a win even if it's not technically perfect.
