Had a stair runner slip halfway through a job in a big house in Scottsdale last week.
I was about to panic when the homeowner's old dog walked over and sat on the loose part, so I just calmly tacked it down right there with him watching, and it turned out perfectly straight.

That bit about the dog holding it down is genius. I had a runner start to creep on me once and my hands were full. I just dropped my knee onto the loose spot to pin it, same idea. That pressure keeps everything from shifting while you get a staple in. Sometimes the simplest fix is right there, you just need a second to stop and think instead of freaking out.

My old foreman taught me to use a scrap 2x4 as a third hand. You can wedge one end under something heavy and lean the other end on the loose board. It's basically a free clamp and it leaves both your hands free to work.
